Visit to Jinja – Part One

Over the weekend I had the opportunity to visit Jinja, about a hour and a half away from Kampala and the ‘source of the River Nile’. I had been in contact with a Pastor here in Jinja before coming to Uganda, so I was able to tie in sharing the word of God with a visit to a rather beautiful part of Uganda. I arrived Saturday afternoon, and was able to relax in the hotel overlooking Lake Victoria (it was rather a nice view).

The hotel had a swimming pool, so it felt good to do some exercise (it’s been too long, and the carbohydrate rich diet is starting to show…) I met with Godfrey and James in a nice western style café in the heart of Jinja town centre, about 10 minutes Borda-Borda ride from my hotel.

Godfrey had planted the church about six months before, and James had joined him form another congregation to support the work. They both worked alongside their church commitments as subletting agents, which prevented them form having to draw a salary from their small church plant. Godfrey also speaks every week on the radio, before the church service, at the local radio station. “Lots of people” was the closest I could get to a figure from them, and the radio station manager,, in terms of the number of people who listen. But their hearts in the right place, and he’s looking for ways to build on that by starting an evening show.

Sadly my radio debut on Sunday morning was cancelled last minute (45 minutes before we were due on air), but it was great to be able to share a word with his congregation that morning and to encourage him in his ministry.
