In 1939, amid his quest to complete his life’s work, the English author J.R.R Tolkien penciled a short story he called ‘Leaf, by Niggle’. The story reflected Tolkien’s frustration trying to capture his vision for the Lord of Rings on paper before his journey to the next life must begin.

The imagery Tolkien uses for the character is that of a leaf. Niggle could capture the magnificence of the leaf, but his vision extended beyond the simple leaf to the tree, forest, and valley that housed it.
